SMC ties up with NGO for a Clean Srinagar City Initiative

Srinagar, Aug 7 (UNI) Launching a massive cleaning operation in the city, Srinagar Municipal Corporation(SMC) today removed tons of polythene and heaps of garbage from the areas surrounding the world famous Dal lake backwaters.

The cleaning drive was conducted in association with an active local environmental group- Global Green Peace (GGP) in the Choudary Bagh and Naidyar Canal in Rainawari area in the down town city.

Head of Eco Conservation Division of GGP said that the initiative which is a first of its kind in the valley will have a two dimensional focus-- one on cleaning up the whole city and another on spreading awareness about eco-conservation and waste disposal.

Under this initiative, every Tuesday GGP volunteers will hold environmental congregation wherein photo exhibitions and movies shall be shown to create awareness among masses on importance of ecofriendly lifestyles and perils of pollution. After that, the sweepers from SMC will fan out to the adjoining areas and clean the areas of garbage and waste.

The programme will continue for coming three months.

Today the sweepers cleaned the areas surroundings the Dal backwaters while GGP volunteers removed tons of polythene from the Choudary Bagh and Naidyar Canal.

Mr Haq Nawaz, Commissioner SMC also visited the areas and gave on the spot instruction to the officers regarding redressal of the various issues, faced by the residents.

SMC health officer who along with his team of officers was supervising the whole campaign said such programme will make the city clean and beautiful but cooperation and participation of public is necessary.

Interestingly the initiative has been named as '' My City'' ''Clean City'' so as to develop a certain sense of belongingness among the city dwellers towards the city.
