Rain fury continues; kills woman, fisherman drowns

Mangalore, Aug 7 (UNI) A 35 year-old woman died when the roof of a house collapsed on her due to heavy rain at Katipalla near Suratkal, about 30km from here early this morning.

Meanwhile, a fisherman, hailing from Tamil Nadu, who had ventured into the rough sea, drowned.

Official sources told UNI that two fishermen had ventured into the rough sea when they were thrown out of their boat last evening.

However, one fisherman was saved by fishermen in other boat, while another drowned. The body was yet to be recovered.

Several fishing boats which left the coast on August 3 are still caught up in the rough sea.

Meanwhile, heavy rain continued to lash the undivided Dakshina Kannada district for the fourth day and low-lying areas in several parts still remained flooded.

The water level at river Netravathy near Bantwal has reached 8.2 mts against the maximum level of 8.5 mts. The other rivers in Udupi district including Sowpernika, Panchagangavali, Chakra, Halady and Varahi are still in spate. Several low-lying areas in Kundapura taluk in Udupi district are still submerged.

About seven houses including six in Kundapura taluk and one in Udupi taluk were partially damaged. Tenginamane area in Nada village in Kundapura was marooned since yesterday. The rain water from Kubja River at Kamalashile in Kundapura entered the sanctum sanctorum of famous old Sri Bramhi Durgaparameshwari temple, yesterday.

Sullya in Daxina Kannada and Kundapura in Udupi received the maximum rainfall of 13 cms each till 0800 hrs today followed by Puttur and Bantwal 12cms, Belthangady 11cms, Karkala and Mangalore 9cms and Udupi six cms.
