Over 4,000 people evacuated from low-lying areas in Rajkot

Rajkot, Aug 7 (UNI) Heavy rains lashing the city since the last three days have flooded low-lying areas in the city, promoting the authorities to evacuate over 4,000 marooned people.

Deputy Commissioner of Rajkot Municipal Corporation P P Vyas told UNI that about 4,000 people were evacuated from Jangleshwar, Bedi Para, Bhagavatipara and Rukhadia colony areas last night.

Waterlogging was reported in 50 areas in the city, fire brigade control room today said.

Rains also continued to lash several parts of Saurashtra region for the second consecutive day today, reports said.

A report from Bhavnagar said 30 mm to 150 mm rainfall had been recorded in most parts of the district.

Rajkot city recorded 209 mm rainfall till 0830 hrs today, taking the season's total to 831 mm, weather office sources informed.

Nyari dam, one of the main drinking water supplying reservoir for the city is overflowing, irrigation flood control room said, adding that Bhadar dam, another resorvior which supplies water to the city, has also received considerable rain water.
