Discharge of water from Mettur dam stepped up for irrigation

Tiruchirapalli, Aug 7 (UNI) The discharge of water from the Stanley reservoir at Mettur across river Cauvery was stepped up following demand from the ryots of the delta districts.

Farmers of the Cauvery delta districts region have appealed to the Tamil Nadu government to ensure uniterrupted supply of water in all the river and irrigation channels of Cauvery river, as the water discharged from the Mettur Dam on July 18, was yet to reach the tail-end areas.

Following this, the PWD authoritites under instruction from the state government, had stepped up the discharge from the dam to 20,000 cusecs since last evening.

PWD sources said the water level in the Mettur reservoir stood at 118.17 feet this morning, as against the full storage capacity of 120 ft. The inflow into the dam was 8,012 cusecs.

From Grand Anaicut in Thanjavur district, 1,773 cusecs of water was let out into river Cauvery and Vennar each, 2,704 cusecs into Grand Anaicut canal and 899 cusecs into Coleroon river for irrigation, sources added.
