AAPSU-AASU tryst to solve boundary dispute

Itanagar, Aug 07: The All Arunachal Pradesh Students Union (AAPSU) is joining hands with All Assam Students' Union (AASU) to find a permanent solution to the decade-old boundary dispute between the two neighbouring states.

AAPSU sources here today said the decision was taken at the fourth general council meeting of North East Students' Organisation (NESO) held recently at Shillong.

Both the organisations decided to conduct people-to-people interactions between the two states for working out an amicable solution to the boundary issue.

The AAPSU congratulated Mr Gumjum Haider on being elected as the new secretary general of NESO and hoped that the new appointee would use his good office to solve many burning issues of the Northeastern region, sources added.

Meanwhile, All Dollungmukh Area Students' Union (ADSU) demanded compensation for the three victims injured in a firing by Assam Forest Protection Force (AFPF) on July 26.

In a memorandum to the state chief secretary, the ADSU said the victims, who were admitted to R K Mission Hospital, had been referred to Apollo Hospital at Chennai for further treatment and urged him to consider the matter, citing that they were poor and could not afford the treatment.

While claiming that Assam forest department had constructed a beat office at Rajali (Dollungmukh) with full protection from AFPF and Assam Police, the ADSU demanded immediate halt to any such construction.

The Roing Intellectual Youth Forum (RIYF) also demanded the state government to construct gates along Arunachal areas bordering Assam.

In a letter to Chief Minister Dorjee Khandu, the RIYF said local people had to suffer due to the big gulf between the actual boundary and the check gates at Ruksin, Shantipur, Sonpura and Banderdewa. He also alleged that the people of Assam were claiming that the existing police post was their actual boundary following the recent rows at Shantipur (Roing) and Kanubari circle in Tirap district.

The RIYF also urged the chief minister to discuss the matter with Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, sources added.
