Tension mounts following recovery of bodies at Nandigram
Midnapore, Aug 6 (UNI) Tension ran high during the CPI(M)-sponsored 12-hour ''Nandigram bandh'' following recovery of three bodies today.
The bandh was called by the left party to protest the killing of two of their activists allegedly by the Bhumi Ucched Pratirodh Committee (BUPC) on July 29.
Superintendent of Police G Srinivasan said three bodies were recovered at Nich Kasba village at Mehendi Nagar under Khejuri police station.
However, the deceased were not indentified yet.
BUPC leader and Trinamool Congress MLA Sisir Adhikary alleged that the bodies were of some CPI(M) activists, who were killed and thrown into the sea by their own party members.
The local CPI(M), however, vehemently denied such allegeation.
Investigation was on to identify the deceased, Mr Srinivasan said adding tension prevailed in the area soon after the news spread to other parts of the village.
Meanwhile, East Midnapore District Commissioner Anup Agarwal said the bandh had been peaceful so far.
All the financial institutions, including Banks, shops and schools remained closed.
Most vehicles also remained off the road, Mr Agarwal said.
Meanwhile, the BUPC activists at Nandigram today resorted to firing towards Khejuri, he said.
However, none was injured in the firing, he added.
