Students pledge to work for a peace and nuclear-free world
Mumbai, Aug 6 (UNI) NSS Units of SNDT and Mumbai University, Bombay Sarvodaya Mandal and Hindustani Prachar Sabha organized a peace rally to commemorate 'Hiroshima Day' today.
About 2,500 students from 61 colleges, social activists, peace-loving citizens from the city participated in the peace rally to mark the anniversary of the devastation of Hiroshima by a deadly atomic attack by America during World War II and to join hands with the people of the world to make a nuclear-free world.
The devastation had such an effect that lakhs were killed in the bombing, leaving several thousands crippled. The after-effects of the bombing and radiation claimed over three lakhs lives over the years.
The peace march started from Azad Maidan and concluded at Hutatma Chowk where a pledge were taken by 2,000 participants to work for peace and a nuclear-free world. The students were carrying placards and banners depicting slogans like 'No More Hiroshima', and 'We want bread, not bombs'.
Students from three city colleges have gone to Hiroshima to participate and join hands with the people of the city to observe the Hiroshima Day. The programme in Hiroshima is being organized by the 'Association for Peace Exchange with the Youth of India and Pakistan'.
The students will be in Hiroshima from August 3-9, and will attend a lot of events and meetings in Hiroshima and will also be meeting with the 'Hibakusha' (the A-bomb survivors). They will meet the Mayor, and offer prayers at the Peace Memorial Park, Hiroshima.
There will also be discussions on the possibility and necessity of a Nuclear Free World.
