SC to take up petition against Goa Speaker

New Delhi, Aug 6: The Supreme Court will today take up a petition challenging the Goa Assembly Speaker's order to restrain two Maharashtra Goa Gomantak Party (MGGP) MLAs from voting in the State Assembly during a vote of confidence against Chief Minister Digamber Kamat.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the MGGP leaders have sought a stay on Speaker Pratap Singh Rane's order.

Rane, through an ad-interim order on disqualification petitions, had restrained three legislators from participating in the Assembly vote, resulting in the Congress victory.

Governor S C Jamir had directed Kamat to undertake a floor test to prove his majority after the Congress Government was reduced to a minority.

During the floor test, two legislators of the Maharashtra Gomantak Party (MGP) - Sudin Dhavalikar and Dipak Dhavalikar - and Victoria Fernandes, the Congress MLA who had resigned from the State Assembly last week, were restrained from voting.

The State Government was reduced to a minority following the withdrawal of support of two MGGP legislators and the resignation of Congress legislator Victoria Fernandes from the State Assembly.
