PM sets up Yamuna river committee under LG, CM
New Delhi, Aug 6 (UNI) Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today set up a Yamuna river development committee which would be headed by Lieutenant Governor Tejendra Khanna and Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit.
The high-powered committee was set up after a meeting to discuss issues relating to conservation and development of the Yamuna River, the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) said in a statement.
The committee would have participation of all stake holders and would commission studies on Yamuna river conservation and development.
Pollution of the river being a major concern, it was noted that with execution of the sewerage and drainage plan prepared by the Delhi Jal Board, the water quality in Yamuna would improve significantly.
''Development of the river front, however, is an exercise which needs to be approached with due care, after proper studies on different aspects,'' the PMO said.
The meeting was attended by Home Minister Shivraj Patil and Urban Development Minister S Jaipal Reddy, besides Mr Khanna and Mrs Dikshit, PM's Principal Secretary TKA Nair, Cabinet Secretary K M Chandrasekhar and other senior officials.
