Play based on Diwan Amarchand's life at National Theatre Festival

Mumbai, Aug 6 (UNI) ''Mrutyunjay'', a play based on a true story on the life and times of Diwan Amarchand in the princely state of Jaipur in 1812, will be performed at the 11th National Theatre Festival on August 16.

Diwan Amarchand, who was not only the financial adviser to King Jagatsinhji but also a popular man for his philanthropic ways and his devotion to the Jain faith.

Speaking to reporters here, the Director Kamlesh Mota said, ''The play highlights the era with the help of dance and music. It vividly describes the trials and tribulations of Diwan Amarchand as he politically maneuvered the Britishers to save his kingdom from falling into their hands. But even as he fought, his sincerity towards his people and most importantly his faith in Jainism remained rock steady.'' ''The play reveals how Diwan Amarchand used the fundamentals of Jainism to lead his King and people to a moral victory over the Britishers,'' he added.

''Using multiple sets, the play will be performed on several locations and with the imaginative costumes, music, dialect and dances it will indeed be like being in Jaipur all those centuries ago,'' informed producers Sheela and Rajendra Butala.

''Mrutyunjay'' stars 30 new comers and popular Gujarati talent like Johny Shah, Grishma Shah and Kamlesh Mota. The play tells the story of a man who took a leap of faith and fought the strongest army in the world with one weapon God.

''Mrutyunjay'' is produced by Shivam and written by Suren Thakkar 'Mehul', the music is by Suresh Joshi, lyrics by Suren Thakkar, costumes by Sheela Butala, set design by Chhel Paresh and dances choreographed by Rajiv Patel while, the story, research and additional dialogues are by Dineshbhai Mody.
