Sydney, Aug 6: Indian doctor Mohamed Haneef's lawyer Peter Russo has said that his client's family wants to sue the Australian Government over the failed terror charge against him.

"You've got to understand the Indians' mentality-- the mentality is to sue," Russo told ABC radio after coming back to Australia from India.

Russo, however, added that Haneef had not asked him to pursue actions against the government.

"I didn't realise that until I got over there and started talking to some of the relatives. But he specifically hasn't asked me to sue," said Russo, who arrived ahead of Wednesday's appeal against Immigration Minister Kevin Andrews' decision to cancel Haneef's visa.

The counsel went on to say that Haneef's family wanted compensation for lost income and damage to his reputation, news.com.au reported.

Yesterday, Andrews said he had no regrets about the way he handled the Haneef case.

The Minister said he had had a tough time in handling the case, and believed that his decision to withdraw Haneef's work visa was just.

Haneef was arrested on July 2 month following the failed terror attack on Glasgow Airport, and was detained for 12 days without charge.

Later, he was charged with supporting a terrorist organisation, but that charge was dropped due to lack of evidence.

Andrews cancelled Haneef's working visa on character grounds just hours after a Brisbane magistrate granted the latter bail.

Haneef has since returned to India, and his preparing to fight his case from Bangalore with the help of his lawyer, Peter Russo.
