Asom assembly adjourned for the day after four adjournments

Guwahati, Aug 6 (UNI) The Asom Assembly today witnessed uproarious scenes, which led to the house being adjourned four times before it was finally adjourned for the day.

The combined Opposition stalled the proceedings demanding a full discussion on the flood damage in the state.

The treasury bench offered to discuss the matter after rushing through the business of the day. However, the Opposition did not accept it and eventually the House had to be adjourned for the day.

As soon as the House assembled for the Question Hour, the Opposition stalled the proceedings and AGP MLA Liaqat Ali rushed to the well of the house. His constituency saw firing over flood relief and he accused Revenue Minister Dr Bhumidhar Burman for failing to provide succor to the people.

He was stopped by Parliamentary Secretary for Home Dildar Rezza of Congress. This resulted in complete chaos forcing speaker Tanka Bahadur Rai to adjourn the house for the first time.

When the house re-assembled, the speaker asked Mr Ali to resume his seat. This resulted in uproarious scenes forcing another adjournment.

The Speaker then called for an all-party meeting and offered a special debate during the afternoon. But when the house reassembled, the Speaker, after rushing through the business, initiated the debate on flood.

''This angered us as we were prepared for a debate at 1600 hrs but the Speaker changed the timing without even bothering to inform us. It was not acceptable to us,'' said leader of the opposition Brindabon Goswami.

The third adjournment came when the opposition MLAs demanded that Dildar Rezza had to be punished along with Liaqat Ali.

This forced the Speaker to adjourn the house for the final time.

Later addressing a press conference, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Bharat Chandra Norah said the AGP were not interested in taking up the flood issue seriously, but were using the situation for political mileage.

The opposition countered it saying that treasury bench never had any interest on serious debate.
