New Delhi, Aug 5: The National Commission for Minorities(NCM) would approach the Prime Minister to press for early implementation of the Srikrishna Commission Report which has named the guilty in the 1992-93 anti-Muslim riots in Mumbai.

Noting that nine years had passed since the Commission submitted its report, the NCM said there should be no more delay so that people knew that every citizen was equal in the eyes of the law.

''We would soon write to the Prime Minister and are writing to the state government in this regard,'' seniormost member of the Commission Harcharan Josh told the sources.

The situation arising out of the non-implemeniation of the report was discussed in a meeting of the Commission this week, presided over by Mr Josh in his capacity as acting chairman of the NCM, a charge he is holding following the resignation of Mr Hamid Ansari who has been nominated as UPA candidate for Vice presidential polls.

Mr Josh said the NCM had demanded that the Maharashtra Government ensure that those found guilty in the Report were brought to book.

The Report has been placed in the state Assembly and accepted, so there was no reason why it should not be implemented, the Members felt, said Mr Josh.

''Every aggrieved citizen of India was entitled to get relief from those who are guardians of law and those who break law should be punihed irrespective of their caste, creed or religion,'' he said.

He said the state of implementation of the Sachar Committee report also came up for discussion and it was decided to approach the Centre to take early and concrete measures to implement its recommendations for socio-economic and educational development of Muslims.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court has directed the Petitioner Action Committee for implementation of Srikrishna Report, to file affidavit within four weeks giving details of the cases in which Justice B M Srikrishna Commission had recommended for action against Shiv Sena and BJP activists and leaders involved in the 1992-93 riots.

The riots had rocked Maharashtra following the Babri Masjid demolition.

The apex court on Wednesady issued the directions after counsel for the petitioner organisation informed the Court that the recommendations of Justice Srikrishna Committee were not being implemented and the report submitted by the retired judge of this Court was gathering dust since 1998.

Justice Srikrishna, who was Bombay High Court judge at that time, was appointed to look into the role played by Shiv Sena and BJP activists during the riots.

Justice Srikrishna, in his report, indicted several Shiv Sena and BJP activists and leaders for their involvement in the riots.
