CM promises Government College at Pangi

Shimla, Aug 5 (UNI) Himachal Pradesh Virbhadra Singh today said a Government Degree College will be opened at Pangi to provide higher educational facilities to the tribal people of Pangi near their homes.

The state government has opened a record number of 21 government colleges in the state during the year, taking the total number of colleges in the government sector to 71, he said, while addressing the inaugural ceremony of the Tribal Bhawan at Balu, constructed at a cost of Rs 86 lakh on the outskirts of Chamba town.

Mr Singh said degree colleges had already been made functional at Rekong Peo, Kukumseri (Lahaul), Bharmour, Tissa, Salooni in Chamba district and were catering to the educational needs of the students of these areas.

The state government had opened higher educational centres in the rural areas and tribal areas to facilitate higher education to the students residing in the far flung areas of the state, he said.

He said literacy percentage had reached at about 85 per cent in the state and women literacy was over 75 per cent, adding that with the opening of new degree colleges in the rural areas the women literacy was likely to increase further.

The Chief Minister also laid the foundation stone of Government Degree College campus at Sultanpur, estimated to be constructed at a cost of Rs. seven crore, besides the Millennium Best Polytechnic at Sarol, first phase of which would be constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 11.50 crore.
