1857 hero Tantia Tope's kin felicitated

Nagpur, Aug 5 (UNI) The kin of Tantia Tope, the hero of the 1857 freedom struggle, were felicitated at a function here today.

Vinayak Tope, the grandson of Tantia and his family were also presented with Rs five lakh at a function organised by Lokmat Group of Newspapers, Bihar governor R S Gavai.

Addressing the gathering, Mr Gavai lauded the role of Tope in the 1857 war, saying he had also sacrificed his life for the cause of the nation.

Vinayak thanked Lokmat group and the Union Railway ministry for the support extended to him. Tantia's descendents have been living in a state of penury at Bithur in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh.

Sometime back, when this was reported by the media, the Railway Minister Lalu Prasad awarded jobs to Vinayak Tope's two daughters.
