Senior police officer escapes bid on life; IED defused in J

Srinagar, Aug 4 (UNI) A senior police officer escaped a bid on his life when militants hurled a hand grenade on his vehicle while security forces averted a major tragedy and also recovered a huge cache of arms and ammunition, including RDX, in Jammu and Kashmir today.

Official sources told UNI that militants hurled a hand grenade at Station House Officer (SHO) of police station, Harwan, R P Singh when he was patrolling the area in his vehicle late last night.

However, the grenade missed the vehicle and exploded at a distance without causing any damage.

Mr Singh and other police personnel escaped unhurt in the attack.

An official spokesman said police today averted a major tragedy when they detected and defused a powerful Improvised Explosive Device (IED) planted by militants at Braripora, Handwara, road to target security forces.

Security forces and police, in a joint operation, recovered two IEDs, two kg RDX and other explosives and eight detonators at Awantipora. The material was later neutralised without causing any damage by the Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS).
