Chandigarh, Aug 4: State Bank of India has donated blood cell counter and other machines to Thalassaemic Children Welfare Association of the city, under Community Services Banking of State Bank of India.

In a function organised last evening at PGI here , Chief General Manager (Mid Corporates) A Krishna Kumar formally handed over the Automated Blood Cell Counter and other machines costing about Rs five lakh to the Association.

Thalassaemia Major is an inherited genetic chronic disease which requires blood transfusions at intervals of 15-20 days to maintain baseline haemoglobin of 10-11 gm so as to have a healthy life.

The World Thalassaemia Federation desires that every Red Cell unit issued to a thalassaemic child must be tested for its hematocrit besides other mandatory tests. The Automated Blood Cell Counter is an essential equipment for having an accurate value of patient's baseline haemoglobin and hematocrit.
