Monsoon remains active in HP
Chandigarh, Aug 4 (UNI) Moderate rain pounded several areas in north-west India as the monsoon remained active in Himachal Pradesh during the past 24 hours, triggering landslides in the hilly state.
Rain lashed some areas in Punjab overnight with Nangal Dam site receiving 11.5 mm rainfall, Patiala 6.3 mm and Ludhiana reporting trace rainfall.
Many areas in Haryana also experienced moderate rain with Narnaul turning the wettest place in the state, recording a 96.0 mm downpour till this morning. Kalka, Morni, Barwala and Raipur Rani recorded 25 mm each while Panchkula measured 10 mm and Ambala 1.8 mm rainfall.
Moderate to heavy rain lashed many areas in Himachal Pradesh, including mid and lower hills, triggering fresh landslides in the state. Some areas in Kangra, Kullu, Mandi and Shimla districts reported heavy rainfall.
All rivers, including the Beas, Sutlej and the Ravi and their tributaries flowing through the state were in spate.
Heavy rain pounded Shimla and its adjoining areas with the capital town turning the wettest place in the state, recording 55.8 mm downpour overnight. Upper areas of Shimla district, including tourist places of Wildflower Hall, Kufri, Naldehra and Narkanda, also had rainfall, forcing tourists to stay indoors.
Kasol recorded 52.4 mm, Kahu 48.0 mm, Berthin 39.0 mm, Rampur 35.0 mm, Suni 32.2 mm, Sujanpur Tira 30.5 mm, Sundernagar 12.6 mm and Kalpa 12.5 mm rainfall. Bhuntar, Una, Guler and Gamroor areas also experienced rainfall.
Intermittent rain lashed Chandigarh and its adjoining areas since last night, providing respite to people from scorching heat. The city, which received 10.8 mm rain overnight, was again pounded by showers today after being enveloped in monsoon clouds.
The Met Office predicted moderate to rather heavy rain at many places in Himachal Pradesh, Haryana and Punjab during the next 24 hours. It warned of heavy rain at isolated places in the region during the next 48 hours.
