Air dropping of food packets begins,Bihar flood situation still grim

Patna, Aug 4 (UNI) Even as two airforce helicopters started airdropping of relief materials in the worst-affected Darbhanga district today, the overall flood situation in the state continued to remain grim with the toll rising to 82 so far.

A report from Darbhanaga said since the flood situation in the state worsened, two IAF choppers dropped foodpackets in the worst-affected Singhvara, Jale, Biraul and Gaurbharav blocks.

The modus-operandi of air dropping had been changed and extra precaution was taken to drop relief packets on targetted places to prevent any loss.

Following slight improvement over the situation, the movement of traffic on Darbhanga-Muzaffarpur road had now been restored, official sources said.

With reports of seven more deaths from Samastipur district alone, the toll touched 82 today.

Reports from the district headquarters said breaches in the embankments on the swollen Bagmati river near Mankauli village inundated several villages in Kalyanpur and Warisnagar blocks, while the situation in Hassanpur, Bithan, Shivaji Nagar and Rosera blocks continued to remain grim.

The situation in Begusarai district was also no better as more than 50 Panchayats there had already been affected by flood rendering lakhs of people homeless.

Large parts of Muzaffarpur district went under chest-deep of flood water after a sudden breach in the embankment of the Burhi Gandak river this morning rendering more than 200,000 people homeless.

More than 300,000 people had been affected in 183 villages in West Champaran district, where Jogpatti, Nautan, Bariya, Majhaulia and Sikcha blocks were the worst-affected.

Among other North Bihar districts still reeling under flood were Katihar, Purnea, Bhagalpur were the worst affected, the sources added.

Meanwhile, the Central Water Commission sources here today said all the major rivers, including the Ganges, Bagmati, Budhugandak, Punpun, Kosi, Mahananda, Sone, Ghaghara, Kamlabalan and the Adhwarad group of rivers were still flowing above the danger mark at several places threatening breach of embankments at many points and subsequent flooding of new areas.
