Tripura SDPO accused of using third degree in police lock-up

Agartala, Aug 3 (UNI) South Tripura Superintendent of Police(SP) K V Srijesh in a report today stated that actions should be taken against a Sub-Divisional Police Officer(SDPO) for allegedly using third degree in police lock-up on July 31.

The SP's report alleged that SDPO Sabroom Amarjyoti Debbarmma carried out the "inhuman physical torture" on one Kamal Acharjee, accused of the murder of CPM activist and member of the village committee Haricharan Tripura.

Police said Kamal Acharjee was taken to Manu Bazar police station on July 29 following his interrogation along with four others, including Narendra Narayan Chowdhury, younger brother of Tribal Welfare Minister Jitendra Chowdhury.

''To extract a confession from Acharjee, SDPO Debbarma hung him upside down and beat him with bottles containing hot water and sticks, while safety-pins were thrust into his nails,'' officials said.

Acharjee's wife Kabari alleged that her husband fainted after being subjected to 'inhuman torture' and was shifted to Manu Bazar rural hospital in a serious condition.

SP Srijesh investigated the matter after complaints were lodged by Acharjee's family members and locals and sent a report to the director general of police recommending penal actions against the accused officer.

Meanwhile, opposition Congress alleged that ruling CPI(M) supporters were involved in the murder of Mr Tripura but the police officer had tried to frame Acharjee in the murder case.
