Rains lash many areas in region

Chandigarh, Aug 3 (UNI) Monsoon rains lashed many parts of the North-West region since last night, bringing a sharp fall in temperature and providing respite to people from the sweltering heat.

The mercury dipped four to seven degrees Celsius below normal at most places in the region, including Patiala, Ludhiana, Delhi, Karnal, Ambala and Narnaul.

The Monsoon remaineed active in Haryana for the second day today and rains pounded several areas in the state. Hissar with 62.4 mm rain turned out to be the wettest place in Haryana, followed by Narnaul measuring 20.0 mm, Chachroli 8.0 mm, Nelokheri 4.2 mm and Karnal 4.0 mm rainfall overnight. Ambala and Jagadhri also recorded showers.

In Punjab, moderate rains lashed Patiala and Amritsar last night, recording 31.5 mm and 11.8 mm downpour respectively. Nangal Dam site registered 2.9 mm rainfall.

Moderate to heavy rain lashed mid and lower hills in Himachal Pradesh, bringing a considerable fall in temperatures.

Nahan was the wettest place in the state, recording 127.2 mm rainfall overnight while Pandoh registered 62.0 mm, Solan 46.4 mm, Mandi 32.0 mm, Solang Nala 21.0 mm, Dharamsala 16.8 mm, Kalpa 15.5 mm and Bhang-Manali 12.2 mm. Gamroor, Dhundi, Berthin, Bhuntar, Kahu and Una also reported moderate rain.

Shimla and its adjoining areas were also lashed by intermittent rains since last night, bringing a fall the temperature. The capital town recorded 11.7 mm rainfall till this morning.

Chandigarh experienced a brief spell of showers in the afternoon after an overcast sky, giving relief to people from the heat. The national capital of Delhi also experienced rain with Safderjung recording 18.6 mm till 0830 hrs.

Moderate to rather heavy rain or thundershowers will occur at many places in Himachal Pradesh, Punjab and Haryana during the next 24 hours, the Met Office said. It warned of heavy to very heavy rains at isolated places in the region during the period.
