Prof Maurya becomes first VC of English and Foreign Lang Varsity

New Delhi, Aug 3 (UNI) Professor Abhai Maurya has been appointed the first Vice Chancellor of English and Foreign languages University, Hyderabad with immediate effect.

The Centre has simultaneously notified the setting up of the English and Foreign Languages University Act, 2006 (No 7 of 2007).

Prof Maurya is from the Department of Slavic Studies, University of Delhi.

This would be the 24th Central University established by an Act of Parliament. With the English and Foreign Languages University Act coming into force, the country now has a dedicated Central University for promotion and development of English and Foreign Languages and their literature.

Prof Maurya, who comes from a peasant family in a village of Haryana, is a first generation learner. He has been a professor of Russian Literature since 1988 and is the founder head of the Department of Slavic Studies in the University of Delhi.

Author of 12 books, both scholarly and creative, Dr Maurya has more than 50 research papers to his credit. He has been awarded and facilitated internationally and has been actively associated with various bodies of UNESCO.

One of such major awards is ''A S Pushkin'' Medal, the highest honour in the field of Russian literature and language.

His novel Fall of a Hero (in English, 1998), Yugnayika (in Hindi, 2004) and Mukti-Path (in Hindi, 2006) have won a wide critical acclaim.
