Journos against roadblock by JAC of Vairengte

Aizawl, Aug 3 (UNI) The Mizoram Journalists' Association(MJA) has strongly opposed the intended road block by the Joint Action Committee(JAC) of Vairengte town.

The blockade was intended to pressurise Assam to give in to their demands. People in Vairengte have demanded from the Assam government an ex-gratia of Rs 10 lakh to the deceased and Rs five lakh to the injured following the July 18 incident for which they set August 14 as deadline.

The MJA's executive committee has agreed to send a team to Vairengte tomorrow to persuade the Vairengte JAC to withdraw their plans and thus avoid creating problems for the whole state.

Meanwhile, the association thanked Assam Police, who arrested the culprits on the July 18 incident at Dholai and demanded for a suitable punishment to them.

The MJA understands the problem faced by the people of Vairengte but it urged the joint action committee to make its demand in a peaceful manner and avoid trouble to the entire state.

Meanwhile, fresh tension could have occurred at the Assam-Mizoram border when unknown people from the Assam side of the border planted banana trees on Sunday on the disputed land where the Mizo Zirlai Pawl(Mizo studnets' association) had constructed Zorun, a waiting shed, as a claim for Mizoram's ''lost'' territory.

On Monday morning, all the planted banana trees were gone urging one Muthu Murmu to file an FIR to the Lailapur police station.

Lailapur police, in what was believed to be in this connection, went to Vairengte, and took one resident Lalramthanga Kawlni, in association with Vairengte police, for questioning. However, Lalramthanga was released shortly after unconditional.

On Tuesday, a number of betel nut saplings were found planted again in the same place. These were, however, uprooted by a police team led by Vairengte SDPO under the orders of Kolasib DC.
