35 feared drowned in boat capsize, 26 killed in flood fury

New Delhi, Aug 3 (UNI) At least 35 passengers were feared drowned when a boat capsized midstream in the mighty Beti river in Samastipur district in Bihar, while as many as 19 people have lost their lives in Uttar Pradesh in various flood and rain-related incidents in the past 24 hours.

An estimated 19 lakh people in thousands of villages in UP and more than 20 districts in eastern Uttar Pradesh are in the grip of severe flood.

At least 121 people have died in the state since the current spell of monsoon.

In North Bihar, large areas were inundated after a sudden breach in the embankment of the Burhi Gandak river this morning, rendering more than 200,000 people homeless. At least 17 people were swept away in different parts of Muzaffarpur.

In a boat capsize incident, all the 35 passengers including several women and children were feared drowned when it capsized midstream in the mighty Beti river in Samastipur district in Bihar.

According to a report from Begusarai district, also in North Bihar, about 200 residents of Bashi village remained untraced since last night following the breach of the embankment of the adjoining Burhi-Gandak river which was flowing much above the danger level for the past ten days.

Seven more people died drowning in various flood related incidents across Asom taking the toll to 27.

Monsoon rains lashed many parts of Northwest region since last night bringing a sharp fall in temperature and respite to people from the sweltering heat.

The mercury dipped by four to seven degrees below normal at most places in the region, including Patiala, Ludhiana, Delhi, Karnal, Ambala and Narnaul.

The Monsoon has been active in Haryana for the second day.

Shimla and its adjoining areas were also lashed by intermittent rain since last night, dipping the temperature.

Chandigarh experienced brief spell of showers in the afternoon after an overcast sky. The national capital of Delhi also experienced rain with Safderjung recording 18.6 mm till 0830 hrs.

Torrential rains lashed several parts of Mumbai city and its suburbs, severely disrupting air, rail and road traffic in the metropolis.

The total rainfall recorded in the city for the last 24 hours till 0830 hrs this morning was 104.2 mm at Colaba in south Mumbai and 82.6 mm at Santacruz in north Mumbai.

In Chennai coast and Kanyakumari in south Tamil Nadu on the other hand, unsually high tides and surging waves created panic among the people.

The rushing seawater due to the huge waves, upto three metres, typically associated with the monsoon, forced fishermen to stay off the sea.

The flood situation in Arunachal Pradesh has improved marginally with the major rivers and their tributaries in Lower Dibang Valley district receding.

Widespread rains lashed almost all mid and lower hills of Himachal Pradesh during the last 24 hours with Nahan being the wettest place in the state with 127.2 mm rain, the met office said.

The southwest monsoon has been active in Konkan and Goa, Vidarbha and coastal Karnataka.

Heavy rains have occurred at most places in west Uttar Pradesh, Uttaranchal and at many places in Orissa and at a few places in Telanagan and at isolated places in west Rajasthan.

Very light rains have occurred at isolated places in Jharkhand, Jammu and Kashmir.

Rain or thundershowers have occurred at most places in Punjab, east Rajasthan, Vidarbha, Chattisgarh, Kerala and at many places in Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, interior Karnataka, Lakshadweep and at a few places in Asom and Meghalaya, Nagaland, Mizoram, Tripura, Gangetic West Bengal, east Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Marathwada, Rayalseema and at isolated places in sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim, Bihar, coastal Andhra Pradesh,Tamil Nadu and Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
