Guwahati, Aug 2 (UNI) The guns of the poachers will now have to overcome the melody of numerous artistes before targetting the animals in the world famous Kazrianga National Park (KNP) in Asom.

Singing sensation Zubeen Garg, who shot to fame with 'Ya Ali' in last year's hit film 'Gangster', has taken up the cause of conservation of the KNP inmates and toured the adjoining areas yesterday in a bid to promote awareness against poaching.

He has roped in over 50 celebrated artistes of various fields, ranging from music to films to painting, to lend support to his cause.

The artistes participated in a rally, which started from Bokakhat and ended at Ghorakati near Burapahar, and appealed to the people to safeguard the precious wildlife in the national park.

The other noted names from the state who took part in the rally included Pulok Gogoi, Noni Borpujari, Champak Borbora, Khogen Gogoi, Biman Baruah, Diganta Bharati, Krishnamoni Chutia, Mrinalkanti, Pabitra Margherita and Manas Robin.

Zubeen sang a song especially composed for the campaign, besides belting out many of his hit numbers. Artistes Pulok Gogoi, Noni Borpujari and Champak Borbora painted pictures at Kohora in sync with the occasion.

A member of People for Animals, Zubeen also set free two rescued deer.

Though the rally was scheduled to visit neighbouring villages to create awareness among the people on how to handle the situation when animals from the KNP enter the villages, inclement weather put a halt to it.

The rally could not have come with a more oppurtunate time as more than ten KNP animals had already been reported killed in this year's flood.

Most of the animals are run over by speeding vehicles as the animals cross the NH 37, which runs through the park, to reach the higher and dry places when the park gets inundated.

Moreover, a spurt in poaching activities has already claimed lives of ten rhinos in the KNP since January and the toll could increase as the monsoons provide a happy hunting time for the poachers.

Hard pressed for manpower, the park authorities are also facing the problem of alleged encroachment of KNP land by suspected Bangladeshi immigrants.

With numerous problems facing this world-famous wildlife park, the artistes' initiative has come as a welcome chance for the park and its inmates to survive the trying times successfully.

The programme was organised by Bhumi, a Bokakhat-based NGO, Aranyak, People for Animals, state department of Forests and Environemt and Wildlife Trust of India. A host of other organisations of the state also supported the cause actively.
