Use tensiometer to measure water content in soil

Ludhiana, Aug 2 (UNI) Emphasising on adoption of water saving techniques in the paddy season, the Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) have urged the farmers to use a 'tensiometer' to measure the water content in the soil.

When this instrument is inserted into the soil, it indicates the soil water status, PAU Department of Soils, head Dr V Beri today stated.

Experiments have shown that irrigation to the paddy crop on the basis of tensiometer results in saving water to the extent of 20 per cent to 25 per cent. This technique is applicable in all types of soils.

The 'tensiometer' has been designed by PAU and is available at a cost of just Rs 300.

Dr Beri said that keeping standing water in the paddy fields does not help in getting higher yields. The standing water should be maintained only for the first 15 days after transplantation.

Thereafter, the crop may be irrigated two days after the complete disappearance of ponded water from the fields. This saves the water as well as reduces the costs of electricity, diesel etc.

The incidence of insects-pests and disease is also reduced by this practice, Dr Beri added.
