TN: Security beefed up for Aadi Perukku festival

Tiruchirapalli, Aug 2: Exhaustive security arrangements have been made in the Delta districts of Tamil Nadu, through which river Cauvery traverses, on the occasion of annual Aadi Perukku festival to be celebrated tomorrow.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Law and Order), Tiruchirapalli A Kaliyamoorthy told the sources that lakhs of people would converge on the banks of river Cauvery, to offer their benedictions.

Anticipating heavy crowd, hundreds of police personnels would be deployed in all the important bathing ghats along the river in the Delta districts to prevent any untoward incidents, he added.

Mr Kaliyamoorthy said services of the home guards and volunteers of NSS have been sought to assist the police. CCTVs would be installed in vital areas to monitor the movement of anti-social elements. Medical teams would be stationed for emergency, he added.

Divisional Fire Officer K Sathiyamoorthy told the sources that Tamil Nadu Fire and Rescue Services Department had formed four special teams to be deployed on the bathing ghats.

Aadi Perukku festival is celebrated in a grand manner on the 18th day of the Tamil month of Aadi. People, especially the newly weds, throng the banks of river Cauvery for their offerings. The newly wedded couples would set afloat their old 'Mangal Sutras' and wear new ones.
