New Police Commissioner vows to eliminate rowdyism

Chennai, Aug 2 (UNI) New Chennai City Police Commissioner Nanjil Kumaran, who assumed charge today, vowed to eliminate rowdyism and initiate steps to ease traffic congestion in the city.

Addressing a press conference here , Mr Kumaran said all necessary steps would be taken to bring the rowdies to book.

''It is a great opportunity to take on the field-level challenges and accomplish them to the satisfaction of the public.'' ''I will live up to the expectations of the general public and Chief Minister M Karunanidhi and take necessary steps to maintain peace within the framework of the law,'' he added.

He said his main priority would be to tackle the traffic congestion in the city.

He assured to solve the pending cases as early as possible and inspire confidence in the minds of the public.

On corruption in the police department, he said ''corruption is an universal problem. It does not prevail in Chennai alone. But if there is any specific corruption charge, we will initiate action.'' Stating that good relationship existed between the police and the public, he urged the public to shed fear and approach him freely.
