Kozhikode, Aug 2 (UNI) The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) in Kerala today appointed Party Treasurer P K Kunhalikutty as officiating General Secrertary of the state unit.

He replaced Mr E Ahamed, who had expressed his inability to continue in the post because of his busy schedule as the Union Minister of State for External Affairs, IUML President Panakkad Syed Mohammed Ali Shihab Thangal told reporters after the IUML Working Committee's day-long meeting.

Mr Kunhalikutty would continue in the post till the election of a permanent General Secretary, in the state committee meeting, scheduled for April 2008, he said.

The Working Committee also appointed Party Vice-President Syed Umer Bafaqi Thangal as Treasurer, Mr Thangal said.

It also decided to spearhead the agitation against the ''anti-people'' policies being pursued by the CPI(M)-led Left Democratic Front government in the state.

As part of the decision, the IUML would take out marches before district collectorates throughout the state on August 18.

The Working Committee adopted three resolutions, including welcoming the release of PDP leader Abdul Nasser Maudhany from Coimbatore Central Prison.

Mr Kunhalikutty had been removed from the General Secretaryship and appointed as Treasurer following the worst ever reverses suffered by the Party in the April-May 2006 State Assembly elections.
