K'taka to approach PM to set up Central University at Gulbraga

Bangalore, Aug 2 (UNI) Home Minister M P Prakash today informed the Karnataka Assembly that the government would approach the Prime Minister tomorrow to press for setting up of a Central University at Gulbarga.

Replying to the issue raised by Leader of Opposition N Dharam Singh he said that the government would submit a memorandum in this regard Prime Minister Manmohan Singh during his visit tomorrow.

He also appealed to the people who are on a hunger strike demanding for the Central university in Gulbarga to give up their protest.

Earlier, Higher Education Minister D H Shankaramurthy said that the government would write a letter to the Centre urging for setting up of the central University as there is not a single Central education institution in the region.

A recommendation to this event had been made even by the Nanjundappa Committee report on regional imbalance, he said.

Mr Singh, who raised the issue during a debate on a Bill, said that the Centre had a proposal to set up 30 such universities in the country and the state government could draw the attention of the Human Resources Ministry at the earliest.
