Haryana to distribute over 3 lakh Soil Health Cards

Chandigarh, Aug 2 (UNI) In order to promote balanced use of fertilisers on soil test basis, the Haryana Agriculture Department will distribute 3,09,000 Soil Health Cards free of cost to the farmers of the state during the current financial year.

An official spokesman said as many as 1,91, 081 Soil Health Cards had been prepared till March 3 this year which were distributed to the farmers free of cost.

He said a soil testing campaign had been launched under which the soil across the state would be tested under the jurisdiction of each agriculture inspector and agriculture development officer of the department.

Soil Health and soil testing awareness camps were also being organised throughout the state. Samples of the soil collected were being sent to laboratory and the analysis report was being given to the agriculture inspector or SDO (agriculture) of the areas so that they could appropriately guide the farmers on the use of fertilisers according to the soil type.

Regarding fertilisers consumption, he said a target of 5.04 lakh MT (Nutrients) had been fixed for Kharif, 2007 against which a quantity of 2.22 lakh MT (Nutrients) had been consumed upto June, 2007.

Fertilisers consumption had touched the level of 12.25 lakh MT (Nutrients) during last financial year as against consumption of 11.29 lakh MT (Nutrients) during 2005-06.

He said as per the State Government decision, the institutional agencies like Hafed, HAIC, HLRDC and HSDC would stock the fertilisers in the lean and consumption period.

The expenditure incurred on the stocking of fertilisers on account of interest on capital cost and godown charges would be compensated by the state government.

A new scheme at a cost of Rs 4.00 crore has been included in the current year's budget for this purpose, he added.
