Mumbai, Aug 2 (UNI) Maharashtra government today announced that it will set up a study group, headed by Principal secretary (Medical education), to discuss the Common Entrance Test (CET) for medical and engineering courses.

Minister of state for Higher and Technical Education Suresh Shetty told the Legislative Assembly that the study group would submit its report in three months. The group would study parameters like how much weightage should be given to 12th standard marks for appearing for CET exams, whether there should be a separate competant authority for conducting CET and whether teachers can be trained to help students prepare for the CET and whether CET can be conducted on lines of that being done in Karnataka.

He was responding to a calling attention notice on the issue of change in syllabus of standard 11th and 12th. Dr Ramchandra Sale, who raised the issue through the calling attention notice, said the CET syllabus had also increased.''Now the examination has 11 subjects now. Due to this, students of the previous syllabus were facing difficulty in coping with the strenuous studies of CET. Similarly, there was shortage of the text books of the 11 subjects for CET. Separate examinations should be held for students of the old and new syllabus,''he demanded.

But, the minister said separate examinations could not be held.
