Elections to 163 urban local bodies on August 30

Bangalore, Aug 2 (UNI) Elections to 163 urban local bodies will be held on August 30, Karnataka State Election Commissioner M R Hegde announced today.

Talking to newspersons here, he said in all 43,56,167 voters, including 21,55,477 women, would exercise their franchise in the elections to be held for 3593 wards in 27 City Muncipal Council, 76 Town Muncipalities and 60 Town Panchayats.

Stating that the code of conduct would come into force with immediate effect, Mr Hegde clarified that it would not affect the ongoing relief works.

He said that of the total 5,099 polling stations, 1,856 were identified as sensitive and 2,050 as hypersensitive.

He said filing of nominations would open on August eight, with the last date for filing being August 16.

Scrutiny of nominations would be taken up on August 17 and August 20 was the last date for withdrawal.

For the first time the Prevention of Disfigurement Act would be enforced. Though the Act was in force since 1991 it was being implemented for the first time in the election to the urban local bodies, he added.
