Election Commission to make voter card compulsory

Mysore, Aug 2 (UNI) The Election Commission will introduce a a pilot project to make photo identity cards compulsory for voting in the next General Elections.

Addressing media persons, Karnatafka's Chief Electoral Officer for R Rameseshan said the project would be completed for providing photo identify cards to voters and including their photographs in the voters list in three Assembly constituencies in Bangalore prior to the elections to be held in 2009.

The Commission would take up the process of the pilot project in three Assembly Constituencies of Jayanagar, Binnepet and Yelahanka in Bangalore from November 15, he said.

''The new system would help avoiding the malpractices and proxy voting in elections,'' he added.

He said after the initial experiment in three Assembly Constituencies, it would be extended all over the state.

The voters could use internet facilities for making additions and delition in the voters list, he said.
