Court directs Govt to pay compensation with interest

Nizamabad, Aug 2 (UNI) A local court today directed the government to pay a compensation of Rs one lakh as well as its interest to the next of kin of two victims, killed in a fake encounter 16 years ago.

The victims- L Narsaiah and Shaik Mohammed- were picked up from this town by the police on July 20, 1991 at 0400 hrs, taken for naxalites and killed at Bhavanigutta in an encounter.

Later, post-mortem was conducted and the bodies were cremated on the same day.

Alleging that the encounter was fake, the family members of the duo moved the local court.

The court, which took up the case in 1996, heard the arguments of both the government and the family members and directed the government to pay compensation to the family members of the victims in 2006, declaring it to be a fake encounter on mistaken identity.

Following this, the government went on appeal against the judgement in the Fourth Additional District Judge, which upheld the lower court judgement and directed the government to pay the interest also from the date of the encounter.
