Panaji, Aug 1 (UNI) The volunteers of South Goa Youth Congress today burnt an effigy of the Leader of Opposition Manohar Parrikar here, to protest his ''vain machinations to topple Digambar Kamat-led coalition government''.

The protesters, led by its president Sankalp P Amonkar, burnt the effigy in front of the Congress headquarters in the city while raising slogans against the BJP-led Goa Democratic Alliance (GDA).

Mr Amonkar later told mediapersons that the BJP had to pay a heavy price for resurrecting discarded politicians such as Atanasio Monserrate, Churchill Alemao and Rudolf Fernandes, son of former Congress legislator Victoria Fernandes, just for the sake of power.

The Congress, he said, kept them at bay, but Mr Parrikar was hobnobbing with these forces to topple the government, forgetting that he had spit venom against them before the June 2 elections.

He urged the party workers to stand united to foil the attempts of the divisive politicians and ensure stability and good governance under the stewardship of Mr Kamat.
