Service Tax dept to open regional offices in Kalyan, Tarapur

Thane, Aug 1 (UNI) The Service Tax department will open regional offices at Kalyan and Tarapur and other places besides the divisional offices, for the convenience of lakhs of Service Tax payers.

Service Tax Commissioner S J Singh made the announcement while addressing an open house session organised by the Thane Chapter of Western India Council of Institute of Chartered Accountants of India here today.

In his speech Mr Singh said that the department was aware of the several issues of the assessess and would surely resolve them in a phased-wise manner.

He said that the Mumbai Commissionerate has been given a target of 38 per cent as compared to 33 per cent last year. He also said that while the national average of the growth was 34 per cent, the growth of Mumbai was envisaged as 57 per cent.

Mr Singh said that the services rendered by the societies are liable to be taxed. Apart from this other services provided to the members by civic corporation or other agencies are not liable to be taxed.

A booklet in this regard was under preparation by his department he said and added that it would be useful to the societies.

He said that it was a fact that a number of services being taxed are presently under dispute and efforts were being made to narrow down these disputes.

He said his department would publish contact numbers and email ids to enable assesses to directly correspond with teh commissioner regarding registration.
