Bhubaneswar,Aug 01(UNI) CPI General Secretary D Raja today accused Orissa Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik of undermining the fake medicine racket and female foeticide incidents in the state.

Describing the proliferation of fake medicines in the state and the largescale female foeticide as a 'fit case' for a CBI inquiry, instead of a crime branch inquiry as ordered by the chief minister, Mr Raja said the union health minister should intervene.

The CPI leader said his party would take up the fake medicine issue at the national level and criticised Mr Patnaik for not seeking the Centre's intervention in dealing with the spurious drug racket which has inter state ramification.

''The state government must feel ashamed of the magnitude of the fake medicine racket and the incidents of female foeticide being reported from many places,'' he opined.

This clearly proved that the chief minister had completely failed to protect the female child and the health of the people of the state, he alleged.

Mr Raja said he was shocked to see the alarming report of female foeticide cases in Nayagarh, Bhubaneswar and other places in Orissa and described it as a 'shame' for the government.

The CPI general secretary said the Orissa government had adopted a 'very callous, irresponsible and insensitive' approach towards these issues which could be described as 'crime of first order'.

Stating that the male-female ratio had assumed a very disturbing trend in states like Haryana and Punjab besides Orissa, Mr Raja said his party would take up the matter with the union health ministry. He was also critical of the functioning of the Union Women and Child Development Ministry in tackling female infanticide.
