Mild earthquake in Jammu and Kashmir, no loss reported
Srinagar, Aug 1 (UNI) A mild earthquake was felt in Jammu and Kashmir today, forcing people to rush out of their homes in panic.
Deputy Director India Meteorological Department (IMD) M L Jyotshi told UNI that 3.1 magnitude tremor was felt at 1023 hours and lasted for few seconds.
Its epicenter was between 33.9 degrees North and 74.6 degrees East within Jammu and Kashmir.
Official sources said people rushed out of their homes and took shelter in open space.
Police said there was no report of any loss of life or damage to property.
A 7.8 magnitude earthquake rocked the Jammu and Kashmir on October 8, 2005 when about 1200 people lost their lives and lakhs were rendered homeless on this side of the Line of Control (LoC) in twin districts of Baramulla and Kupwara, bordering with Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (POK) where about one lakh people were killed and lakhs of houses destroyed.
