Jeep dashes into speeding train

Phagwara, Aug 1 (UNI) A major accident was averted when a speeding jeep dashed into Nanded Sahib-bound Sachkhand Express after breaking a closed railway crossing at Gohawar between Goraya and Phagwara stations in Punjab yesterday but the driver managed to keep the train on the tracks.

According to the Railway sources, the jeep was dragged for a distance and was badly mangled in the mishap. Its driver, however, had a miraculous escape as he jumped out of the vehicle.

He then fled the site.

The train was detained for 40 minutues at the accident site and was allowed to proceed only after a complete inspection of the train.

Rail traffic on both up and down lines between Goraya and Phagwara remained suspended for over one hour.

Railway Police has registered a case and a departmental enquiry has been ordered.
