GHRO wants Comm to solve border issue b/n Assam-Arunachal

Itanagar, Aug 1: Global Human Rights Organisation (GHRO) has urged the state to immediately constitute an independent Commission on boundary issue and construct a wall to demarcate borders with its neighbours - Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.
GHRO chairman Goken Bam here today said the NGO has further requested the government to start immediate dialogue with its Assam counterpart as well as the Centre for an amicable and permanent solution to the inter-state boundary issue and maintain peaceful coexistence between the neighbours.

On the recent incident at Dollungmukh in Lower Subansiri district, where three Arunachalees were seriously injured in firing by the Assam Forest Police, Mr Bam said the incident was totally uncalled for.

Terming the incident as 'barbaric', GHRO condemned the incident and said it was in violation of the Supreme Court order to maintain status quo on inter-state boundary issue.

''The Assam government has violated the status quo,'' he said and added that the boundary dispute was a common phenomenon, where many lives and property of the Arunachalees residing in the border areas have been lost.

The NGO also highlighted examples of recent incident at Tanglam Russa village of Kanubari sub-division of Lohit district, in which Assam officials with the help of police forces demolished a school building and had beaten up one Arunachalee boy without any valid reason.

In another incident, Assam officials and the police had demolished a school building in Santipur in Lower Dinang Valley district, Mr Bam said adding that they had also gheraoed the deputy commissioner of the district and snatched away his personal security officer's pistol.

Condemning such "undemocratic" incidents, the organisation strongly urged the Assam and Arunachal Pradesh government to immediately arrest and book the police personnel and erring officers, who were involved in these incidents and demanded exemplary punishment as per law.
