Col Vasanth cremated with military honours

Bangalore, Aug 1 (UNI) The mortal remains of Colonel Vasanth, who laid down his life for the country while fighting with militants in Uri Sector of Jammu and Kashmir were consigned to flames at the Kalpalli Crematorium in the city with full military honours today.

The body of the slain officer was kept at his residence to enable people to pay their last respects. It was taken to the crematorium in a procession and consigned to flames with full military honours.

Wreaths were laid on behalf of the Army Chief and General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Headquarters Southern Command, GOC ATNK&K Area.

Former Karnataka Chief Minister Veerappa Moily, Karnataka Minister R Ashok and Lok Sabha MP Tejaswini Ramesh also paid last respects to the officer who was killed yesterday and placed wreaths on the body. Senior military officers, including Brigadier Clement Samuel, Commander of Karnataka and Kerala Sub Area MLIRC, Belgaum, police officials and retired army officers, including Capt Gopinath, the chairman and managing director of Deccan Airways, paid floral tributes to the departed Colonel.

A group of soldiers drawn from Maratha Light Infantry Regimental Centre fired three times in the air and reversed their arms as a mark of respect to the martyr.
