257 candidates in fray for Jalandhar MC elections
Jalandhar, Aug 1 (UNI) As many as 257 candidates are left in the fray to contest the Jalandhar Municipal Corporation elections as 119 candidates withdrew their candidatures today.
Deputy Commissioner Ajit Singh Pannu told media persons here this evening that on the last day today, 119 candidates withdrew their candidatures from contesting the August 8 municipal corporation elections. ''Now 257 candidates are left in the fray to contest the elections to be held for 60 wards,'' the DC said.
He said six Returning officers (RO) have been appointed for the 60 wards and there would be a total 455 booths and each booth would be manned a staff of four persons.
As many as 70 booths have been identified as very sensitive, 263 as sensitive, while the rest 122 as non-sensitive booths, the DC said adding that all the booth falling under each police station would be monitored by a Deputy Superintendent of Police and three DSPs would be monitored by one SP rank officer, the DC said.
The corporation elections would be conducted on EVM machines and for this 675 machines had already reached, he said.
A complete ban of carrying of fire arms have been imposed and all government and private institution would remained closed the polling day.
The polling would be held from 800 hrs to 1600 hrs and results would be declared the same day, he said.
