Woman inspector gets two years' imprisonment

Bhopal, July 31 (UNI) A special court here today sentenced a woman police inspector and one other to two years' imprisonment and fined them Rs 2,000 each.

Special Judge A K Bhave delivered the verdict.

Shahida Sultan was arrested by the Lokayukta police at the Bhopal railway station in May 1997 with a suitcase containing Rs 6.03 lakh.

Shahida was on deputation with the Transport Department and was posted at a checkpost on the Maharashtra-Madhya Pradesh border in Burhanpur.

Shahida had claimed that one Javed Mirza had given her the amount to purchase a tractor. The court made Mirza also an accused in the case. He was sentenced to two years' imprisonment and Rs 2,000 fine for giving false statement.

As the matter was under consideration, Shahida and Javed had submitted a petition before the High Court, which ruled that the Lokayukta action in the case was appropriate.

However, both have been granted bail for appealing before the High Court within a month.

The incident had created a political storm with allegations being levelled against the then Congress Government.
