Vijayawada Postal Region doing well: Official
Vijayawada,July 31 (UNI) Post offices in Vijayawada Postal Region have turned profitable by adopting innovative technologies and intesive marketing of new schemes, a senior official said today.
Addressing the press here, Vijayawada Region Postmaster General B V Sudhakar said the region earned Rs 1.25 on every rupee spent. As many as 87 of the 5,000 post offices in the region have become high earning units.
Post offices in rural areas were marketing mutual funds of SBI, UTI and Reliance among others. In the last two years, post offices in Andhra Pradesh collected Rs 81 crore under various mutual fund schemes of which the Vijayawada Region's share was Rs 58 crore. It also earned Rs 2.06 crore by way of commission.
Another important revenue garners was the Rural Postal Life Insurance Scheme (RPLI) from which the region secured Rs 737 crore by way of premium in 2006-07. It earned eight per cent as commission on the premium collected.
Mr Sudhakar post offices in Khammam, Guntur, Prakasam and Nellore Districts in the region were disbursing wages under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Programme(NREGP) for which it opened 5.17 lakh saving bank accounts and paid Rs 67.86 crore earning Rs 1.39 crore as commission.
The Vijayawada Region executed over 1.36 lakh money remittance transacations receiving Rs 220 crore from NRIs earning good commission.
From August one all post offices in the region will market BSNL's services like the sale of re-charge coupons, he added.
