Tiruchirapalli targets Rs 1,700 crore via tax collections

Tiruchirapalli, July 31 (UNI) The Commissionerate of Central Excise, Tiruchirapalli, has set a target of Rs 1,700 crore for excise duty and service tax collection this fiscal.

In a chat with newspersons here today, Central Exercise Commissioner Bhikho Ram said that target for excise duty collection was Rs 1,350 crore and service tax was Rs 350 crore for the current fiscal.

An overall growth of 30 per cent was expected in tax collections this year. During the financial year 2006-07, it had collected Rs 1,090 crore as excise duty and Rs 274 crore by way of service tax, he said.

Mr Ram said the Commissionerate, comprising the revenue districts of Tiruchirapalli, Pudukkottai, Karur, Perambalur, Thanjavur, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur and Karaial, had collected Rs 274.15 crore as excise duty and Rs 48.36 crore by way of service tax in the quarter ended June 30, 2007, he said, adding this was much higher than the figures corresponding period last year at Rs 201 crore excise duty and Rs 46.6 crore service tax.
