Hyderabad, July 31 (UNI) Justifying the Centre's decision to import wheat, Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar today maintained that wheat growers in the country were provided a remunerative price, when compared to the price released during the previous NDA government.

After attending a joint review meeting along with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to assess the progress made by farm sector in Andhra Pradesh, Mr Pawar told reporters that though the domestic wheat production was sufficient to meet the demand, the UPA decided to import wheat to build a bufferstock to meet any shortage in future during floods or droughts.

The farmers were now happy as an additional Rs 100 per quintal was provided as minimum support price, when compared to the previous NDA regime, he claimed. He denied the opposition charge that the Centre was importing wheat at Rs 1,400 per quintal while it provided only Rs 800 per quintal to the domestic farmers.
