Aizawl, July, 31 (UNI) The owner of the seven pigs, which were shot dead by an order from the Champhai district magistrate on Saturday, today threatened to sue the authorities.

Mr Zoramthanga, a resident of Mission Veng here, claimed that he bought the pigs from Mizoram's Vaphai village at Rs 60,000 and he had the certification of the village council president (VCP) that the animals were from the village and not from Myanmar.

He was arrested by Champhai (Mizoram border town) police on Friday and taken into custody with his pigs and spent the night at the lock-up. He alleged the police and the magistrate did not pay heed to the VCP's letters, and the pigs were shot dead the next day.

The Champhai district administration has been keeping strict vigil at the border against imports of pigs and poultry after bird flu alert, and this was not the first time that they have killed 'smuggled' pigs.

Champhai's superintendent of police F Lalhuliana, however, said that they had come across so many such VCP's letters which claimed the pigs were bought from Mizoram itself, so they did not pay much attention to the latest incident either. He said that they had earlier been informed there were no more pigs to be bought from Vaphai village. He pointed out that animals even those from inside the state (near Myanmar border) were being shot as precautionary measure.

The sealing of the borders against import of pigs has resulted in scarcity of the highly-demanded pork in Aizawl markets as the state does not meet the demands.

Meanwhile, the Assistant Drug Controller has sounded warning against Chinese-made toothpastes which have found to contain 'Diethylene Clycot,' a poisonous chemical. He advised the public not to use these Chinese toothpastes.
