'Obesity is a health-related issue that needs serious attention'

Mumbai, July 31 (UNI) Obesity is just seen as a consequence of urban lifestyle and not as a health related issue that needs serious attention, says Dr Sujit Chatterjee of Hiranandani Hospital.

Talking to reporters here yesterday, Dr Lakdawala said, ''We would like people to be more aware of the severity and complexity of obesity and the right approach to its treatments. Obesity is just seen as a consequence of urban lifestyle and not as a health related issue that needs serious attention, we intend to change that outlook.'' Bariatric surgery is a life-saving alternate for obese people who fail to show weight loss by conventional methods, said Dr Mufazzal Lakdawala.

''With the help of this surgery, these candidates also can take care of a host of other co-morbidities,'' he said.

Surgery, he said, offers the only proven method for achieving long-term sustained weight loss in the morbidly obese.
