Kohima, July 31: Nagaland has sounded high alert across the state and banned imports of fowls and pigs following reports of avian flu in neighbouring Manipur.

State chief secretary Lalhuma yesterday called a high-level Consultative meeting with all heads of the government's deparments to take stocks of the situation arising out of brid flu in Manipur, which shares over 500 kilometres inter-state boundary.

The meeting discussed the preventive measures and alerted all departments to take all possible stepts against the importing of fowls and pigs.

"The high alert is essential as Nagaland shares common border joining the southern districts of the state with the northern districts of Manipur and Nagas are known for high meat consuming people as they may import the infected birds, as few such cases were caught by the veterinary officials and police recently." All imports of fowls and pigs to Nagaland from Manipur were banned for indefinite period and as follow-up action the Kohima Municipal Council has decided to cancel the import permit of fowls and pigs from outside the state.

Meanwhile, Nagaland Director General of Police (DGP) J. Changkija has directed policemen to check in all the gates leading to entry and prohibit the entry of poultry in the state.
